Why You Should Level Your Concrete Before Winter

Winter is right around the corner, and with it brings the snow and freezing rain. While many of us look forward to this time of year, it also brings with it its fair share of work and worry. As you start going through your checklist, making sure you’re ready for the season, one thing you should make a point to inspect is the concrete in your drive or walkway. If this concrete is badly cracked or uneven, you should consider getting it leveled before the winter really sets it. But why level your concrete before winter?

When the snow and ice hit, getting from point A to B can already be tricky enough. When you add uneven concrete to the mix, you’re basically creating a recipe for a trip or fall. Often, the uneven areas are obscured or hidden because of the snow and ice, and even when you can see them, they are much easier to slip on. Getting your concrete leveled can help avoid this problem and the medical bills and headaches that can come with injuries.

When you’re out there with your snowblower in below freezing temperatures, the last thing you want to have to worry about it is having the machine get caught or scrape along on the broken and uneven pieces of your driveway. And yet, if you can’t see where you’re going, any uneven area is going to make this nightmare a reality. This can take what should be a relatively easy job and make it twice as hard. It also adds to the wear and tear on your snowblower.

It’s simple science: as the water from snow and ice gets into the cracks and uneven places in your concrete, it will do some pretty damaging things. Winter is the absolute worst time for concrete issues to be left untreated. Ice expands, so this action will only serve to make your concrete even worse. What starts as a small problem will only get worse over time, until you have to spend even more time and money fixing the issue.
